Scenario: You've completed the paramount task of creating your web pages. You feel like a successful Don Quixote. Now you face the equally enormous task of publicizing you page! After all, what good is it to have a page that no-one sees? Especially if you are selling something! The last thing you want to do is sit in hyper-space and wait!
I. Getting your page noticed - Submit your pages to search engines and link to sites. I won't kid you. This is a huge task! How much effort you put into this will depend on how much exposure, or "hits", your page will get! This is a time consuming task that almost 100% has to be done on-line. I've tried to help out here and link you to a service to get you some FREE on-line time. You don't have to stay with this services, but grab the FREE time they offer to get this huge job done. In fact, just about every thing listed here is FREE!
II. Get Ready: You have to prepare for this task. First, get a nice note pad that you can use comfortably at your work station. If you don't have a lot of room, consider a columnar pad. You will need this for keeping track of where you have posted and what you were in the middle of when your service kicks you off the net. This happens to every one! You will have to go back and log on and sometimes (this is the easy part) you forget exactly where you were at. It is very easy to get lost on the web! You will find yourself "jumping" around like a frog on a hot plate. One link site will lead you to another, and now, where were you? There are literally thousands of places to link to and it is a lot faster to look at your notes than it is to ask their search engine if they have your link. Especially since some of them take up to 30 days to include you! Plus, if you move or have major changes, it makes it easier to go where you've been if you have a record!
Another reason to keep this note pad is some of the sites you can link to require a "reciprocal link". They usually have "bots" that check and if you fail to include them, they will fail to include you. Unless you have a photographic memory or a really neat pop-up note system you will need to write down the name of their site, URL and link to directions.
A
while after I posted this page I received the nicest e-mail! I received
information on "Stick-up
Lites!" Compact, easy to use, has more whistles and bells than
you would expect, is downloadable and FREE for 15 days to check it out!
The full "office" version price is only $19.95! I like it - I
like it! Thank you Jody!
III. Get Set: Write down what you want to say. The information that will be asked for when you "submit" your link(s) will vary. Especially if you have more than one page to link to! (Don't mean to beat a drum, but "Stick-up Lites!" will help here! You can have a whole "note-pile" going - in the long run $20 will save you a lot!) Almost all will ask for the "Title" of your page and the "URL". Some also ask for your E-mail address and a brief description. The description space they allow varies. Some only allow 50 or 60 characters total, including spaces, commas, etc... Others allow 25 to 75 words. A few have no restrictions but remember, some one is going to have to read all that! Still others ask what heading(s) you want to be under and/or what your "search" or "key" words are, ie: if you are selling pillows, key/search words might be; bedding, pillows, decorating, etc... You will spend far less time if you write them down ahead of time, kind of like a script!

AND THIS ONE!
I've gotten them both - and the information is valuable. You won't get traffice to your pages through search engines if you are number 2,005 in a search that turns up 20,000 pages! (See entry #7 in my guest book!) Positioning does get results!
IV. Be Forewarned: This process can be frustrating and time consuming. Jumping from site to site tends to fill up your cache and bog down memory. You may have to shut down completely and re-start after only a couple of hours, or move at a snails pace! The venture on which you are about to embark will go smoother if you upgrade 2 things:
(If anyone wants to know, "is a pentium really faster and worth the upgrade over a 486DX/66?" Quite honestly, yes! I just upgraded to a 166 w/ Windows 95. This means a full upgrade of ALL my software - I don't care what anyone says - DO NOT mix 16 bit with 32 bit software - but overall it's turning out to be worth the hassle. E-mail me your experiences. Sharing successes and follies is the best way to help each other!)
V. Free On-Line Time: I am currently with AOL & GNN. Soon, however, GNN will be no more (there will be a bridge link at this address - sign my guest book and I will be sure to e-mail you the new address) and everything will somehow transfer over to AOL.
AOL (America On Line): AOL has been super in their support and service, has super techs and lots of benefits for being a member and great whistles and bells! The cost runs from $4.95 a month for limited access to $19.95 a month for unlimited access. Plus, you get up to 10 megabytes of free web page space (2 megs per sign on name.) The support is super and the software is free. Fill out the form at this link and I will send you 1 month service and 50 hours FREE with no further obligation to get you started on the web!
VI. SCANNED PHOTOS: Products, people,
family portraits, pets, everyone has a photo they would like to put
up on the web. Now comes the problem. Getting that photo into your
computer - looking like it does outside of your computer! If you are fortunate
enough to have a nice flat bed scanner - great. But have you seen the size
of those files you scan in? Full color has it's price! Especially if you
don't have a scanner - then you have to either do without or pay someone
else! Scanning services can range from $1/photo (minimums apply) to $6
per photo (average) at the copy centers or printers. Well, I
have discovered the ultimate solution!
|
VII. GO: You may want to copy the following URLs, or at least this URL, into your "Bookmarks", "Hot List" or "Favorite Places". This will make point and click easier. I have listed large "link to sites" that will get you to many other link to sites. There will always be some I've missed - I don't think anyone could ever find all of them! If you run across one you think I should include, please e-mail me!
LinkLinkLinkLinkLinkLinketc...
Some sites charge a fee to link. I have tried to include only those that are FREE - however, some of these FREE link-to sites may lead you to pay for link-to sites. You may want to check a site out before you decide to add your link. There may be some that you elect not to be associated with, depending on the nature of the site you want to link, your personal beliefs, etc... It's up to you! (Freedom of Choice - or something like that!)
